SUBJECT:                       State Tournament Information

 

This memo contains important information to schools qualifying for the 2010 State Bowling Tournament. 

 

LOCATION

The state tournament will be held on Thursday, February 25,(Class 1A) and Friday February 26,(Class 2A) at the Plaza Lanes, Inc., 2701 Douglas Avenue, Des Moines, IA.  We will start at 1:00 p.m. with the Parade of Bowlers and the National Anthem.  Actual competition will begin at 1:20 p.m.  Doors will open for spectators at 12:00 p.m.

 

COACHES AND BOWLERS MEETING

There will be a coaches meeting in the check-in (east) room at 12:30 p.m.  At this time we will give instructions for the parade.  At 12:45 all participants need to report to the check-in (east) room to line up for the parade.  Timeliness and cooperation is imperative in making the parade a success.

 

ROSTER

The State Tournament roster can be found on our web site by clicking here. This roster must be filed with our office by fax (515-284-1969) no later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2010. The roster is a downloadable Microsoft Word document. If you have trouble downloading the form, please contact the IGHSAU as soon as possible.

 

PICTURE

Also, please remind all coaches team pictures for the schools that qualify for the State Tournament are needed for the State Bowling Program.  Due to the quick turnaround time, all photographs would need to be sent via e-mail to Heidi Reed  at heidireed@ighsau.org.  Photographs should be sent in a JPEG format and must not exceed five megabytes in size.  Please remember to include a photo identification when sending team photos.  All photos must be sent to the State office no later than 4:30 p.m. Monday, February 22nd.  Teams do not have to wait until the end of Regional Tournaments to send their team photo.  Feel free to e-mail photos at any time.

 

PASS GATE

Participants will enter through the pass gate at the southeast corner of the building.  Only those names on the previously filed roster will be allowed admittance.

 

 

 

 

EQUIPMENT STORAGE

Participants will have a designated (non-secured) area to place their equipment.  The only equipment to be at the lanes is the equipment being used by the bowlers.  Due to limited space all bags must be placed in the areas assigned to the participants.

 

FORMAT

Teams and individuals will bowl two (2) games of ten-pin.  Those scores will be posted to determine who will be competing for the individual championship.  The teams will then enter into the Baker games.  At the conclusion of the Baker games the top ten (10) individuals bowl a third game which will be added to the first two games scores to determine the Individual Champion.  Every bowler who qualifies for the state tournament is eligible for the individual competition.

 

PLAYERS

Teams are allowed a maximum of six (6) bowlers and two (2) coaches through the pass gate at the southeast corner of the building.  Individual qualifiers are allowed one (1) coach.

 

ADMISSION & PARKING

Admission for the tournament is $8 per person.  Spectator entrances will be at the Southwest and Northwest corners of the building. Parking is available to the west of the building with the majority of parking behind the building and to the east.

 

AWARDS

A public ceremony will be held at the conclusion of all competition. Awards will presented to the Champion and Runner-up teams and to the top ten (10) individuals in both boys and girls.

 

PICTURE PLAQUES (BOYS ONLY)

Each student athlete participating in the state tournament will receive a picture plaque.  Both qualifying teams and individuals will have their pictures taken at the state tournament site in the check-in (east) room.  The photographer will be available at 11:00 am.  No pictures will be taken after 12:30 pm.

 

TRAVEL ALLOWANCE

To supplement travel expenses to the tournament, schools with teams will receive ($1.05) per mile one-way and schools with individuals will receive ($.37) per mile one-way.

 

MERCHANDISE

Official State Bowling merchandise and programs will be available on-site.

 

OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS

Steve Pope Photography will provide photographic coverage for the State Bowling Tournament.  Steve will take action, reaction and team photographs of the tournament.  Individual and team award ceremonies will be covered as well.  After the tournament, photos can be viewed and ordered at www.stevepopephotography.com.  Steve will have a display at the tournament with information concerning previewing and ordering photography.  All orders and inquires for this event must be made with Steve Pope Photography through his website and/or phone number (515) 277-7663.

 

PEP RALLY PHOTO

Photographers will be present throughout the competition taking pictures of the state tournament.  Photographs taken can be viewed at http://www.iowahallofpride.com/PepRallyPhoto.html after the completion of the meet.  Pictures can be ordered from this website.

 

SPECTATORS POLICY

All spectators at state-sponsored bowling tournaments shall wear shirts and shoes.  Shirts shall extend to the waist-area.  Masks are not permitted.

 

Use of  Òlaser lightÓ pens by a spectator shall result in immediate ejection from the facility.   With the understanding that a tournament bowling match is held as part of the educational environment, the Board of Directors of the Iowa GirlsÕ High School Athletic Union has adopted the following policies.

 

Disrespectful conduct, including profanity, obscene gestures or comments, offensive remarks of a sexual nature, or other actions that demean individuals or the event.

Penalty—EJECTION

Throwing articles onto the contest area.  Penalty—EJECTION

 

Entering the contest area in protest or celebration.  Penalty—EJECTION

 

Physical confrontation involving contest officials, coaches/directors, contestants, or spectators.  Penalty—EJECTION

 

Spectator interference with the event.  Penalty—EJECTION

 

Use of artificial noisemakers, signs, or banners.  Penalty—WARNING/EJECTION

 

Chants or cheers directed at the opponent.  Penalty—WARNING/EJECTION

 

BANNERS

The display or usage of balloons, banners, signs, hoops, placards or other paper debris is prohibited.

 

Additionally, any object that could provide a safety concern (pom-poms on sticks, etc.) is prohibited, as is any artificial noisemakers (e.g. airhorns, cowbells, keys, thundersticks, etc.).  Excluded from this rule are permanent wall displays or signs used for general administration of the tournament.  Uniformed cheerleaders may use signs or cards to lead cheers, but may not use a banner.

 

 

ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO POLICY

No alcohol or tobacco is to be sold or consumed on the grounds of any state tournament venue leased or provided to the Athletic Union for the purpose of conducting a state championship.  Section 123.46 of the Iowa Code states:  A person shall not possess or consume alcoholic liquors, wine or beer on public school property or while attending a public or private school-related function.  A person shall not be intoxicated or simulate intoxication in a public place.  A person violating this subsection is guilty of a simple misdemeanor.

 

PETS/ANIMALS PROHIBITED

No pets are permitted at events sanctioned by the IGHSAU OR IHSAA.  Any person with a pet will be asked to leave.  This policy shall comply with the provisions of Iowa Code 216c in that such a person with a disability or person training an assisted animal has the right to be accompanied by a service dog or an assisted animal under control.  The person is liable for damage done to any premises or facility by a service dog or assisted animal.
