ANKENYÑAlexis Beard and Joel Bethel of Ankeny shot a record 65 to win the championsip at the 33rd annual Iowa High School Co-Ed golf tournament Monday at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny,
Beard and Bethel were six shots under par, shooting 33 on the front nine and 32 on the back They topped the meet record of 69 sert by Ellen Fry and Bennett Hammerberg of Cedar Rapids Washington last year,
Beard, a junior, was third in the girls class 3A medalist competition and Bethel, just out of his sophomore year was sixth in the 2002 boys state 4A fall state tournament. The 18 hole meet was contested over 18 holes with alternate shot format.
Six strokes back in second place was a Pella pair of Sharilyne Hoekstra and Stuart Steenhoek with an even par 71. Fry, a member of Washington's 2002 record breaking team joined Nick Miller on the third place team with a score of 72.
Linn-Mar, Grinnell and Dubuque Wahlert all shot 74 with the ties broken by comparing scorecards.
The co-ed meet is the only one of its kind in the United States and is co-sponsored by the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Union.
