1999 IGCA ALL-STAR GAMES
MONDAY, AUGUST 9--URBANDALE
URBANDALE--Home runs by K.J. Johnson of Cedar Rapids Jefferson and national record holder Erica Martinez of Fort Madison provided all the runs as the 3A all stars swept a pair of games at the 15th annual Iowa Girls' Coaches Association all-star softball series.
Johnson hit a two-run shot in the 3rd inning in the class 3A 2-0 win over class 2A and Martinez hit a single shot in the second inning of 3A's 1-0 win over 1A in the night's final contest.
Earlier in the evening, the class 1A stars pounded out nine hits in a 5-1 win over class 2A. Woodward-Granger's Jen Bice, the national strikeout record holder played third base through most of the contest and was three of four at the plate. Colfax-Mingo's Libby Hysell picked up the win for the small schools who scored three runs in the first inning on hits by Angie Hulse, Kim Sturm, Bice and Brenna Larson.
Martinez and Amy Kulisky of Runnells Southeast Polk combined for two hit shutout in the 3A win over class 2A. Each allowed one hit. Ankeny's Erica Junod reached on a hit in the second and scored when Johnson's homer hit the top of the fence and left-center field and bounced over. Martinez picked up the win and had seven strikeouts.
Fairfield's Natalie Adamson was perfect through five innings in 3A's 1-0 win over class 1A. Kulisky was again the reliever, giving up a pair of singles. Martinez, who holds the state single season (24) and career (47) home run totals hit a shot cleanly over the left center field off loser Jodi Christensen of North Polk.
A select team of 12 girls from the three classes will travel to Eau Claire, Wisconsin on Tuesday for the Tri-State softball challenge. The top senior players from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin will meet in a round-robin series.
The Iowa Girls' Coaches Association inducted Dale Schreurs of Des Moines into their umpires hall of fame. Henry Christowski, now at Simpson College, who coached at Norwalk, Indianola and West Des Moines Dowling and Don Menke of Estherville-Lincoln Central were named to the coaches' hall of fame.
