Class 3A will have a new state champion.

Third-ranked Sioux City Bishop Heelan took control with a big first-half run and beat defending champion Cedar Rapids Xavier 47-31 in a first-round game.

Sophomore center Millie Niggeling led Heelan with 16 points, while Bradley recruit Michelle Lund added 14 points and six assists. Another sophomore, Carli Tritz, scored 11 for the Crusaders, who move into to Thursday night's semifinals with a 23-2 record.

This is the first time in three state tournament trips that Bishop Heelan has advanced past the first round.

Seventh-ranked Xavier couldn't overcome a long drought during the middle of the game and bows out with a 17-8 record. Caitlin Kray led the Saints with 10 points. Colleen Bouchard scored seven, while Kristin Maher had six points and seven rebounds.

Bishop Heelan led just 11-9 late in the first quarter, then went on an 18-1 run that continued into the second half. Niggeling scored six points during that stretch. Lund added a 3-pointer and a baseline runner.

The Crusaders held Xavier without a field goal for 11 1/2 minutes. Xavier was able to regroup and cut the lead to 35-24 after three quarters. But Bishop Heelan scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to put it out of reach.

Niggeling did most of her scoring inside while making seven of 12 shots, but she also stepped outside to hit a couple of jumpers. Lund scored seven of her team's eight third-quarter points to keep the Crusaders from losing control.
