CLARIFICATION---GIRLSÕ BASKETBALL
November 15, 2007
RE: BRACES, SLEEVES, BANDS, ETC
FOR: 7-12
GRADE GIRLSÕ BASKETBALL
Normal knee and ankle braces are legal and do NOT need
special permission from the IGHSAU to be worn. Remember that any exposed hinge on a brace must be
covered. Similarly, a knee
sleeve or thigh sleeve is legal and needs no special approval.
Bicep bands worn on the arm, knee straps worn below the
knee, and any sleeve worn on the arm or fingers DOES need special approval from
the IGHSAU office in order to be worn.
Please submit a letter of request providing the athleteÕs name and grade
and reason for the request. A
doctorÕs or certified trainerÕs statement is also required before approval will
be granted. Please fax that
statement to me at 515-284-1969.
If approved, a letter will be provided for the coach to show to the game
officials and/or opposing coach prior to each game so as to alleviate any
possible question or concern. You
may not just show the doctorÕs statement to the officials---you need a letter
of permission from the IGHSAU.
Remember Rule 3-5-2 a reads—ÒA guard, cast, or
brace made of hard and unyielding leather, plastic, pliable (soft) plastic,
metal, or any other hard substance may not be worn on the elbow, hand, finger,
wrist, or forearm---even though covered with soft padding.Ó
Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience regarding this
rule. If you have any question,
give me a call (515-288-9741).
REVISION ON THE PRE-SEASON MEMO:
Under the 06-07 Changes---TEAM CONTROL FOULS----#1 should
read Òthere is no team
control during a throw-inÓ instead of Òduring a free-throwÓ. My mistake---sorry!
Hope everyone is off to a great start!
