GirlsŐ Basketball Starting Date Change

Effective with the 2008-09 school year, the first competition date for girlsŐ basketball will change from the Monday of week 21 to the Friday of week 20. In 2008, this date is Friday, November 21.

This change comes in association with the end of games associated with the Iowa GirlsŐ Coaches Association clinics. Those games were previously held on the Saturday of week 20, in advance of the published starting date.

The move also provides scheduling relief associated with this yearŐs compression of the basketball season.

In an associated change, if a school participates in a jamboree, the jamboree must be completed by Thanksgiving. Currently, jamborees must be completed before the first regular season game. However, with the change in game date, many jamborees which take place during the weekend prior to Thanksgiving would otherwise be adversely impacted.

There is no change in the 21-game season limitation.

Rationale: Previously, eight IGCA Clinic games have been held on this Saturday. Those games are no longer going to be held. Starting on the Saturday gives some relief to the compression of the season, and provides another non-school day to schedule games.
