Loss of School Time for Early Season Softball Tournaments

 

The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union has rescinded a rule which prohibited loss of school time for participation in a regular season softball tournament.

The Board of Directors had previously removed other loss of school time restrictions for regular season competitions, preferring to allow each district local control when determining the appropriateness of missing school time for interscholastic competition.

With the pending move of softball forward in the school calendar this summer, the Board of Directors action leaves any loss of school time associated with softball competition to the complete discretion of each school administration.

The Board of Directors does continue to encourage all competition be held outside of the school day when possible, recognizing that scheduling, travel and facility limitations do require an occasional loss of school time.
