Waverly-Shell Rock 2, Davenport Assumption 1

 

Michelle Fiene's goal with 24 minutes left in the second half lifted fifth-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock to a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Davenport Assumption in Class 1A first round action at the Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournament in Muscatine.

 

Fiene's short crossing shot from Holly Denner broke a 1-1 tie in the second half to propel the Go-Hawks to their first-ever state tournament victory.

 

Waverly-Shell Rock (18-2) scored first when Siri Doely scored on a crossing shot from Hanne Wuertz 17:21 into the match.

 

Davenport Assumption tied the score in 9:57 into the second half when Kate Gardner scored on a Krysta Schmitt assist.

 

Both teams had 13 shots on goal.

 

Waverly-Shell Rock (18-2) faces second-ranked Dubuque Wahlert in the 1A semifinals Friday at 4 p.m.
