Waverly-Shell Rock 2, Dubuque Wahlert 1 (Shootout)

 

Dubuque Wahlert's bid for the fifth state soccer title came to an end when third-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock defeated the second-ranked Golden Eagles 2-1 in a thrilling 2-1 two overtime shootout.

 

Wahlert scored the lone goal of the first half when Emily Burgmeier scored on an Erin McDonald assist.

 

The Go-Hawks, who missed on several scoring opportunities in the first half, tied the score in the 66th minute when Chelsea Frye scored on a Lesley Willson assist.

 

After two scoreless overtimes, the Go-Hawks won the shootout, 4-3, with Jill Kraayenbrink scoring the clinching goal.

 

Waverly-Shell Rock advances to its first ever state championship match, facing top ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier at 11 a.m. Saturday. Dubuque Wahlert ends its season at 14-5.
