Class 1A Championship - Davenport Assumption 1, Waukee 0

A quick strike was all second-ranked Davenport Assumption needed to join their male counterparts as soccer champions in Class 1A.

Jenni Wilberding's goal two minutes into the match proved to the only offense the Knights needed to edge Waukee, 1-0, in the Class 1A soccer championship.

The Knights, who were not scored on in either state tournament match, held off several Waukee threats with goalkeeper Elizabeth Maus playing a solid match in the net.

The state championship give the Knights bragging rights in Class 1A for both boys and girls soccer. Two weeks ago, the Assumption boys captured the Class 1A boys state title. 2002 marked the first year that the Girls' State Soccer Tournament had a two-class tournament.

Davenport Assumption ends the year 15-3-1 while Waukee finishes 12-4.
