Mary McPhail's goal 12 minutes into the match allowed top-ranked West Des Moines Valley to advance to the semifinals of the Class 2A Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournmaent with a 1-0 victory over tournament newcomer Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

McPhail's unassisted goal was all the offense the Tigers (16-1) needed as the Valley controlled the ball for much of the match. A strong performance from Council Bluffs goalkeeper Jenny Fauble kept the score close.
