For the second straight year, Class 1A belongs to Davenport Assumption. And for the second-straight year, the Knights had to sweat out a 1-0 victory against a Little Hawkeye Conference opponent in the finals.

Kate Gardner's goal from Emily Motto two minutes, 50 seconds into the second half was all the scoring the defending champs needed to upend Norwalk in the 1A championship game.

Last year, Davenport Assumption won the Class 1A title with a 1-0 victory over Waukee. Like 2002, defense and field position was the story. Norwalk outshot Assumption, 6-4, but the Knights enjoyed another shutout performance from goalkeeper Elizabeth Maus, who recorded six saves in goal and her fourth shutout in five state tournament matches.

Norwalk goalkeeper Lindsey Hendrickson had five saves.

Davenport Assumption finishes the year 14-2-1 while Norwalk closes out its season at 18-5.
