The shootout was the first in a Class 1A girls soccer state tournament game. Waterloo Columbus/Don Bosco won the shootout 4-3. The two schools were tied after five shots then Columbus won in the second-round of the sudden death shootout.
It looked like top-ranked Gilbert would have little trouble with the Sailors. Freshman Amanda Housken scored two of her three goals in a one minute span, scoring the first 12 minutes into the match before adding a second less than a minute later. She would later score her third goal 33 minutes into the half on an Abbey Clark assist.
Housken's heroics were matched by Columbus senior Ann Caley. Caley scored on a corner kick 20 minutes into the match to bring the Sailors into halftime trailing 3-1. She added another with 13 minutes left in the match and tied the score with a 20-yard boot that sailed into the right side of the Gilbert net with just a minute to play.
Both teams missed on scoring chances in the overtime to force the shootout, where Columbus won 4-3.
In addition to Caley's performance, Waterloo Columbus received an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Adrie Wessels, who made 19 saves along with some key saves during the shootout.
Waterloo Columbus/Don Bosco improves to 17-2 and will face Norwalk at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Gilbert suffers its first loss of the year to end the season 20-1.
