Class 2A first round - Urbandale 1, Iowa City High 0 (2OT Shootout)


Urbandale sophomore goalkeeper Whitney Franker stopped eight shots on goal and three shots in the shootout series to lift the fifth-ranked J-Hawks to a 1-0 double overtime shootout victory over fourth-ranked Iowa City High in first round action of the Class 2A Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournament in Muscatine.

Both team missed several golden opportunities to score during both regulation and the overtime periods. Elizabeth Nerad recorded nine saves in goal for Iowa City High.

The match came down to the shootout kicks, which Urbandale won, 3-2. Brittany Waddell made two of the goals in the shootout, with the go-ahead goal a penalty kick when teammate Jackie Fox was fouled during her shootout kick. Katie Jo Burgett made the other shootout kick for the J-Hawks.

Lauren Hartson and Jessica Villhauer made shootout kicks for Iowa City High.

The Urbandale victory sets up a match-up between the last two Class 2A state champs as the J-Hawks, champs in 2001, face off against defending champion Dubuque Wahlert in the Class 2A semifinals at 9 a.m.

Iowa City High ends its season at 15-4.
