Class 1A Championship - Cedar Rapids Xavier 2, Dubuque Wahlert 1


Cedar Rapids Xavier made it a clean sweep in soccer. Last week the Xavier boys won the 1A state title. The girls made it two-for-two in Class 1A as the Saints edged Dubuque Wahlert, 2-1, the Class 1A state championship game.

Both teams battled to a scoreless first half into Xavier took advantage of a Dubuque Wahlert foul seven minutes into the second half. Sara Clancy converted the penalty kick to give Xavier a 1-0.

The Saints added an important insurance goal 69 minutes into the second half when Bailey Dorrington knocked a shot past Laurie Trifone. The Golden Eagles countered right back on Erin McDonald's goal. Xavier fought off a furious Wahlert rally to take the first state soccer title in school history.

Wahlert outshot Xavier 11-7 with both goalkeepers recording seven saves.

Cedar Rapids Xavier ends the year 16-5 while Dubuque Wahlert ends its year at 15-5.
