Courtney Stoermer's with eight minutes gone in the second half was all Iowa City West needed to stop Johnston, 1-0, to win the Class 2A girls state soccer title.
Iowa City West topped the second, ninth and fourth-rated teams at the State Soccer Meet. The Women of Troy scored the match's only goal on beautiful crossing shot from Jackie Kaeding to Stoermer, who headed it into the goal.
Other than that goal, the game was even with no other scoring threats. Both teams had just one shot on goal.
The victory is the first state title for Iowa City West in four appearances. The Women of Troy were fourth in 1999, second in 2000 and third in 2001.
Iowa City West ends its season at 16-4 while Johnston, making its first state tournament appeanance, ends the year 15-3.
