Class 1A first round - Davenport Assumption 2, Waverly-Shell Rock 1


Top-ranked Davenport Assumption survived a pesky Waverly-Shell Rock team as the two-time defending 1A champions topped the Go-Hawsk, 2-1, in first round action of the 1A Girls State Soccer Tournament.

The Knights struck first as Krista Schmitt scored on an assist from Angie Guy 19 minutes in the match. The Go-Hawks responded just before halftime when Megan Englin knocked in Jenn Green's pass to tie the score.

Assumption scored the go-ahead goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half when Kristin Blough scored unassisted.

Assumption (16-2-1) dominated the game, outshooting Waverly-Shell Rock 10-1.

Davenport Assumption faces Cedar Rapids Xavier in the state semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday. Waverly-Shell Rock, making its first state tournament appearance, ends its season at 15-3-1.
