Class 1A Semifinals

West Des Moines Valley 3, Johnston 1

Whitney Sharpe propelled West Des Moines Valley back to the Class 2A Soccer Championship match as her two goals helped the top-ranked Tigers to a 3-1 victory over fourth-ranked Johnston in the Class 2A semifinals at the Girls State Soccer Tournament.

Sharpe’s breakaway goal with 17 minutes remaining broke a 1-1 tie. The all-stater also scored Valley’s first goals with nine minutes remaining in the first half.

Johnston tied the score two minutes into the second half Colleen Shannon goal. Alyssa Flamm added an insurance goal with two minutes remaining in the match.

West Des Moines Valley shoots for an unprecedented third-straight Class 2A state championship tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they face Cedar Rapids Kennedy in a rematch of last year’s state championship match. Valley won last year’s title game in a 1-0 shootout.

Johnston ends its season at 17-3
