Trisha Nesbitt’s first half goal was all Ames needed to advance to the Class 2A semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Pleasant Valley in the first round of the Class 2A Girls State Soccer Tournament in Muscatine.

Nesbitt’s goal came from an assist from Natalie Hashemi at the 32-minute mark of the first half.

The Cyclone defense held Pleasant Valley in check for much of the match. The Spartans were held to just eight shots while goalie Meghan Hackson recorded five saves.

Ames advances to the Class 2A semifinals where they will face Sioux City North or Cedar Rapids Kennedy at 6 p.m. Friday. Pleasant Valley ends its season at 15-5.
