Bishop Heelan 4, Waverly-Shell Rock 2

Bishop Heelan stunned second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock in the first round action at the Girls State Soccer Tournament.

The seventh-ranked Crusaders missed several golden scoring opportunities in a scoreless first half until Hannah Maly scored eight minutes into the second half on a Carly Tritz assist. Tritz also set up the Crusaders’ second score five minutes later, assisting on Carli Tritz’ goal. Heelan also had goals from Amanda Hoffman and Taylor Jennings.

Waverly-Shell Rock’s goals were scored by Chelsea Frye and Leslie Wilson.

Waverly-Shell Rock outshot Heelan, 15-13 with Heelan goalkeeper Hillary Hanno recording five saves, including a stop on a Chelsey Frye penalty kick.

Bishop Heelan (15-4) advances to the Class 1A semifinals to face Pella Friday at 4:15 p.m.

Waverly-Shell Rock, last year’s 1A runner-up, finishes the season at 18-2.
