Cedar Rapids Kennedy 3, Sioux City North 2 (Shootout)

 

Rachel Spellerburg stopped three shootout kicks to lift third-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy to a 3-2 victory over Sioux City North in Class 2A first-round action at the Girls State Soccer Tournament.

 

Spellerburg stopped all three shots in the shootout while Katherine Lewis, Julianne Lord and Jade Grimm made all three of the Cougars shootout kicks.

 

The Cougars had to fight from behind the entire match. Sioux City North struck first when Emily Kaplan scored in the 31st minute on an assist from Sally Williams.

 

Cedar Rapids Kennedy tied the match nine minutes into the second half on a goal from Grimm only to have Sioux City North retake the lead five minutes later on Taylor HattingÕs indirect kick. Kennedy tied the score on Jessica Powers goal with 20 minutes remaining in the match.

 

The match was suspended for 70 minutes due to a thunderstorm.

 

Cedar Rapids Kennedy improves 18-1 overall and will face Ames in the Class 2A semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday. Sioux City North ends its season at 11-3.
