Waverly-Shell Rock erased the disappointment of its first-round exit at last year’s State Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Nevada in first round action at the Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournament Thursday afternoon in Muscatine.

Kaylee Benning scored the Go-Hawks’ lone goal on an assist from Natalie Erhardt three minutes into the second half . Waverly-Shell Rock outshot Nevada, 11-9, for the match.

Waverly-Shell Rock advances to the Class 1A semifinals Friday to face defending champion Cedar Rapids Xavier at 4 p.m. The semifinal match will be a rematch of the 2006 Class 1A state championship, won by Xavier, 5-1. Nevada ends its season at 13-5.
