Pella 3, Sioux City Bishop Heelan 2 (PKs)

 

Pella advanced to the Class 1A State Soccer semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons with a 3-2 penalty kicks victory over third-ranked Sioux City Bishop Heelan Thursday afternoon. The Lady Dutch face Dallas Center-Grimes Friday at 4:15 p.m.

 

Pella withstood a quick Bishop Heelan goal to score two goals in 10 minutes. Beth Van Wyk tied the score with a goal at the 12 minute mark with Heidi Vander Molen giving the Dutch a 2-1 lead  with her goal 18 minutes left in the first half.

 

Bishop Heelan tied the score with a quick goal from Kristen Gobell two minutes into the second half. Despite both team having several opportunities, neither team could score the rest of regulation and the two 10-minute overtimes, leading to penalty kicks. Maria Mate –Kodjo kicked in the clinching PK to send the Dutch to the semifinals.

 

Pella improves to 13-4 while Sioux City Bishop Heelan, whose season was ended by Pella in last yearŐs 1A semifinals, ends its season at 13-4.
