Johnston 3, Sioux City North 1

Ninth-ranked Johnston scored two goals in the first 13 minutes to stun third-ranked and previously unbeaten Sioux City North, 3-0, in Class 2A first round action at the Iowa Girls State Softball Tournament in Muscatine.

Sioux City North, who had given up just two goals the entire season, found itself down 20-0 early thanks to two goals from Katie Nielsen. Maddie Mansager scored Johnston’s final goal in the last minute of the first half.

Sioux City North’s lone goal came from Ashlie Stokes with 20 minutes left in the match.

Johnston improves to 13-5 and will face second-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the Class 2A semifinals Friday at 6 p.m. Sioux City North ends its season at 12-1.
