Class 2A Championship Match

Cedar Rapids Kennedy 3, Iowa City West 1

 

After three years of runner-up finishes, Cedar Rapids Kennedy can finally call themselves state soccer champions in Class 2A.

 

The top-ranked Cougars completed an unbeaten season with a 3-1 victory over Iowa City West in the Class 2A championship match.

 

Iowa City West put a scare into the Cougars, scoring the matchÕs first goal with 5:52 remaining in the first half when Allex Strang scored on a Nicole Rondeau assist.

 

Kennedy roared back in the second half, scoring three minutes, 10 seconds into the second half as Shauna Happel knocked in Lauren HazelkaÕs deflected shot to tie the score.

 

Jade Grimm, the 2A all-tournament captain, scored the go-ahead goal at the 61 minute, drilling a crossing shot past a diving Micaela Haight. Grimm added another unassisted goal with 6:28 remaining in the match. Kennedy outshot Iowa City West, 22-3, with West benefiting from several outstanding saves in goal from Haight.

 

Cedar Rapids Kennedy ends its season 20-0, winning its first state soccer championship. Iowa City West ends the year at 15-5.
