FORT DODGE--Cedar Falls won a record fifth straight state swimming championship in impressive fashion today at Fort Dodge High Schoiol.
The Tigers scored 304 points to 197 for Bettendorf who edged Dubuque Senior by one point for runner-up honors. Cedar Falls has now scored over 300 points in each of its five straight titles--a total only matched by Cedar Rapids Washington who won the 1977 state title.
Cedar Falls' consecutive state wins topped the old mark they shared with Des Moines Hoover who had won four straight titles in the early 1970s.
The winners were led by seniors Hillary Mason and Katie Galligan who closed out outstanding careers. Mason won the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events and was a member of the winning 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay winning teams.
Galligan who was named the meet's most outstanding swimmer by the Iowa Swimming Coaches Association set a record in 50 yard freestyle, won the 100 yard freestyle and anchored the winning 200 yard freestyle relay. Cedar Falls coach Dick Marcussen was honored at the meet as the state's coach of the year.
Sophomores Becky Lyons and Alex Cook were members of both winning relay teams and junior Abbie Peterson joined Lyons, Cook and Mason on the record setting 400 relay team. Both Mason and Galligan end their careers with nine state championships, second on the all-time list to former teammate Randi Peterson who graduated last year.
Bettendorf was the meet runner-up despite not winning an event. The Bulldogs got a second place finish in the 500 freestyle from freshman Leigh Taylor and wree second in the medley relay with Jessica Brenner, Taylor, Kerry Feaer and Emily Joseph.
Third place Dubuque Senior won the first two events of the meet. Darci Newt won the Friday night diving competition, while Meghan Hesseling, Dana Wallis, Melissa Matz and Erin Strub were first in the 200 medley relay which opened the Saturday program.
Junior Heidi Landherr of Marion Linn-Mar won an individual event for the third straight year. This year's title came in the 200 yard individual medley. Her previous two titles had been in the 100 yard butterfly. She finished second in that event to Pleasant Valley's Amber McDowell this time.
Allison Lyle, a senior who attends school at Keota, but competes for Iowa City West in a cooperative sharing program won her second straight title in the 100 yard breaststroke. The 100 backstroke winner was sophomore Laurie Bratten who had missed most the 1997 competitive season with a shoulder injury.
