RE: Rule Memorandum # 1
The swimming season has started with great success and we have you as coaches and officials to thank for the great start of the 2000 swim season. Good luck to all as we head to District and then State competition. By this time all officials and coaches should have received the IGHSAU Swim Manual and the National Federation 2000-2001 Rules Book. If you did not receive said manual or rules book, please contact the IGHSAU and we will get one to you immediately. Also, for your information the Manual is on the web site for your reference. As many of you know, the rule book and manual were distributed at the rules meeting this year. We hope that you appreciated this method of receiving this important information from the IGHSAU.
Lap Counter: Section 4 -1. As you have noticed the lap counter is optional this year. However, if a swimmer chooses to use a lap counter, they (the lap counter) must be in position at the start of the race and remain in that position for the entire race. If the swimmer chooses not to use a lap counter, no one will be allowed in the lap counter position for that lane or swimmer. Also, an individual cannot start as a lap counter in the middle of the race. You must be in position at the start of the race and remain for the entire race or have no one there at all in the position as a lap counter.
Full Body Swim Suits: The question has been posed whether the full body swim suit is legal. The full body swim suit will be allowed in IGHSAU competition. The same limitations of Section 3 - 1 will be in place for this uniform/suit.
Goggles: Goggles are not part of the uniform as of this year. Please note that the uniform requirements do not pertain to goggles as of this swim season.
Power Rankings: Power rankings will be posted on the IGHSAU web site. The first ranking will come out the week of September 11th. Coaches are requested to send in their meet results to the IGHSAU, the success of this project depends upon the participation of all coaches.
District Assignments: District swimming assignments will be assigned later in the month of September and posted on the IGHSAU web site.
Handling Body Fluids During the Contest: Officials be sure to read pages 4 & 5 of the 2000 IGHSAU Swimming Manual on this issue. This is a very important aspect of your job as an official.
Good luck this season, and feel free to contact the State Office should any items arise.
