Algona 27-16-21-25-15, Winterset 25-25-25-19-11

Tenth-ranked Algona rallied from a 2-1 deficit to stun third-ranked Winterset, 3-2, in a thrilling Class 3A first round match at the State Volleyball Tournament Wednesday in Cedar Rapids.

Both teams were almost statistically equal throughout the match with Algona (33-7) surviving a brilliant performance from Winterset junior Jodi Purdy, who had 34 kills and 21 digs for the Huskies. Natalie Hackbarth led a balanced Bulldog attack with 23 kills while Katelyn Seely and Rachael Nelson had 15 and 13 kills, respectively.

Algona, the Class 3A runner-up in 2005, advances to Friday’s 3A semifinals at 2:15 p.m. Winterset ends its season at 31-10.
