Mount VernonŐs strong
net play proved to be too much for second-ranked Pella as the Mustangs stunned
the second-ranked Dutch, 3-0, in Class 3A first round play at the Iowa State
Volleyball Tournament in Cedar Rapids.
The Mustangs, featuring
a front line of three players six feet or taller, had eight solo blocks and 12
block assists, forcing Pella into 26 attack errors against 24 kills (-.018 kill
percentage). Shelby Kintzel had six blocks and 10 kills to lead Mount Vernon
while Brianna Strong has 10 kills with five blocks.
Haley Brillhart had a
match-high 11 kills to lead the Lady Dutch, who fall to 35-7.
Mount Vernon improves to
26-7 and faces Algona in the Class 3A semifinals at 2:15 p.m.
