Mount Vernon 25-25-25, Algona 15-12-23
Mount VernonŐs young
team was supposed to use this yearŐs state tournament experience as a stepping
stone for next season. Someone forgot to relay the message to the Mustangs.
Mount Vernon, ranked 13th,
advanced to the Class 3A championship game by steamrolling Algona, 3-0 in
semifinal action Friday. Mount Vernon now faces defending champion Sioux City
Heelan in the 3A title match at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Mustang defense
smothered the Bulldogs, forcing Algona into 26 hitting errors. Mount Vernon was
paced by Shelby KintzelŐs 17 kills and three blocks.
Natalie Hackbarth led
Algona with eight kills.
Mount Vernon will play
in the Class 3A championship Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Mustangs will be shooting
for their first title since defeating Dike in the Class 1A championship.
