Class 4A First Round

Johnston 25-19-25-25, Iowa City High 20-25-18-8

Abby Sonner had 11 kills and 11 digs to lead second-ranked Johnston past No. 10 Iowa City High, 3-1, in first round action at the State Volleyball Tournament in Cedar Rapids.

The Dragons (38-2) dominated the defending Class 4A champs; recording 18 blocks while hitting .257 as a team. In addition to Sonner’s team-high 11 kills, Colby Lindsey added nine while Katie Nielsen had seven. Taylor Knuth, Tory Knuth and Kari Queck all had five blocks for the Dragons, who improve to 38-2.

Iowa City High was led by Brittany Nelson’s 11 kills and seven service aces. The Little Hawks end their season at 25-13.
