2010 IGHSAU Volleyball
Memo #2
Line Judge Flag Usage: Through Iowa Adaptation, line judges are now required to use flags at all high school competitions (9th, 10th, JV, V). Officials are required to purchase a set of flags and schools are encouraged to do so as well. A portion of the OfficialsÕ On-line Rules Meeting can be a good training tool for proper flag mechanics. Flags are available at most sporting goods stores. HonigÕs Whistle Stop carries the flags as well. Their website is Honigs.com.
On-line Rules Meeting for Coaches and Officials – All head
varsity volleyball coaches and officials are required to view the IGHSAU rules
meeting on-line. The on-line meeting
is available on the IGHSAU website until August 27th. An on-line verification process must be
completed after viewing the rules meeting. To be eligible for post-season
tournament play, officials must view the on-line rules meeting, then pass the
open book examination, and submit their availability on-line. Answers
to the officialsÕ examination will be posted on our website Monday, August 30th.
Site Availability – To be considered for hosting tournament series games, Athletic Directors need to apply via the Online Personnel Entry Forms on the IGHSAU website. All schools are eligible to apply to host.
Classification – Please check the classification list on the IGHSAU website to ensure your schoolÕs BEDs number is listed correctly. The pairing process will begin in the near future so please make sure your school is accurately listed.
Headbands – Per NFHS rule, hair adornment made of soft material and no more than two inches wide may be worn (Rule 4-1-6). Glitter and sequin headbands may be worn if there is a clear outer coat covering the glitter/sequins to prevent them from flaking off. Exposed glitter/sequins, which can be rubbed, picked or scratched off from a headband is illegal.
QuikStats – It is required to submit volleyball stats on Quikstats. Varsity volleyball coaches must use the online QuikStats Iowa website, which is www.quikstatsiowa.com to file volleyball statistics. The two mandatory reporting dates: Monday, September 13th and Monday, October 11th. Please note: Schools are encouraged to submit their schedules for placement on the IGHSAU website.
Varsity Warm-Up Protocol – All pre-match warm-up shall
consist of a 5-6-6 format. Both
teams shall have five minutes together on their half of the court for ball
handling, passing, etc. Then the
visiting team is allowed 6 minutes of court time. Then the home team is similarly allowed six minutes of court
time. There shall be no mutual serving time. Serving shall be done within each
teamÕs allotted six minutes. Warm-up
protocol for weekend tournaments is at the discretion of the tournament
manager.
Ejected Player Protocol – We hope the player ejection rule will not be used this season, however some questions have arose. The ejected offender may be removed from the vicinity of the team bench provided there is authorized school personnel available to supervise. (When the offender is a coach or adult team personnel, the offender shall be removed from the premises.) The IGHSAU adheres to the NFHS protocol for issuing yellow/red cards (Rule 12-2, p. 45-46).
Good luck this season!
