CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS

Hinton 3, Durant 1

Jamie VanderKooi's 20 killls paced tournament newcomer Hinton to a 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 victory over Durant in Class 2A first round action at the Iowa Girls State Volleyball Tournament Thursday night.

VanderKooi's effort highlighted a hard-fought match as the fifth-ranked Blackhawks had three players reach double digits in kills. Delainye Harderson knocked down 13 winners while Jessica DeRocher added 12. Tara Christensen had 15 digs and 47 assists.

Durant, making its second tournament appearance, was led by Julia Brus' 15 kills and 16 digs. Teammate Heather Brus added 12.

Hinton advances to the Class 2A semifinals Friday to face Aplington-Parkersburg or Mediapolis.
