2005 Iowa Girls State Volleyball Tournament

CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS

Algona 3, Marion 2

Algona survived a record-setting performance from Marion's Angela Bys to advance to the Class 3A semifinals with a five-game 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 victory over the Indians.

Algona's win was overshadowed by Bys, who recorded 46 kills, 16 digs and five service aces. The 46 kills is a Class 3A record and the most recorded in the state tournament since going to the rally scoring and four class formats in 2003. The 46 kills is the most since Center Point-Urbana's Kim Kester registered 54 kills in a 1998 Class 2A semifinal loss to Western Christian.

Algona used a balanced attack to prevail with Hanna Simonson had 17 kills with five blocks and 17 digs while Maggie Schuttler added 15 and Melanie Hackbarth added 132.

The second-ranked Bulldogs put their unbeaten record on the line when the Bulldogs face third-ranked ADM in the Class 3A semifinals Friday at 2:15 p.m.
