Dubuque Wahlert 3, Algona 0
Top-ranked Dubuque Wahlert became the first school to win six consecutive state crowns by sweeping second-ranked Algona, 25-12, 25-20, 25-19 in the Class 3A title game Saturday afternoon.
Kayla Banwarth knocked down seven kills with 15 digs and three service aces to lead the Golden Eagles, who finish the year 39-3. Lisa Heitkamp had nine kills while Calli Johnson added eight.
The victory was the third state title for coach Julie Kieffer, who has won three straight championships, the last two with Wahlert and the 2003 4A title with Dubuque Hempstead.
Algona suffered its first loss of the season. The Bulldogs, who finished 41-1, were led by Maggle Schuttler's seven kills.
