What an exciting time of the year with the start of girl’s basketball and the approaching season!!  Hopefully the first week will go great for all of you!  The following information will hopefully remind or inform the coaches and athletic administrators of some of the important details related to the upcoming girl’s basketball season.

  1. The 2018-2019 regional girl’s basketball manual has been posted on the IGHSAU website.
  2. The 2018-2019 state girl’s basketball schedule has been posted on the IGHSAU website.  Please note that the schedule of state tournament games has changed this year.  Class 5A will start the tournament off on Monday, February 25 at 10:00 am followed by 3A, then 4A, then 2A, and finally Class 1A.  The 5A and 3A championship games will take place on Friday, March 1 with the 4A, 2A, and 1A championship games taking place on Saturday, March 2, 2019.  The only change from last year is the flip-flop of Class 4A and 3A – this was done to avoid conflicts with the sub-state boys basketball tournament.
  3. Be sure the head girl’s basketball coach has viewed the basketball rules meeting by the first competition.
  4. Girl’s basketball scoresheets will not be mailed out this year. You have two options for basketball scoresheets – you can either download them from the IGHSAU website – go to Coaches and administrator’s tab then download the scoresheets OR you can request the IGHSAU to mail you 100 scoresheets at a cost of $5.00.  Please contact Monte Wilson if you would like to purchase the scoresheets ([email protected])
  5. Please enter rosters and schedules into Quikstats. A reminder that Quikstats must be updated weekly by noon on Tuesday throughout the season – 1st check is on Tuesday, November 27, 2018.  One change this year with Quikstats is the “Evaluation of Officials” piece.  When you go to enter the score and stats from each game you will be able to “Evaluate” the game officials for that game by clicking on the “red star” which allows you to briefly evaluate the officials in a short minute. This feedback will help Chuck Brittain, Supervisor of Officials have additional information to assist in the assigning of the post-season.  This “isn’t required, but recommended, encouraged, and hoped that the coaches will be completing this piece of information.”  Also, when you go into Quikstats, you will notice an additional opportunity to download an app called “Varsity Bound” which is an avenue for coaches and spectators to get stats and information on their iphones.
  6. Coaches, please complete the 2018-2019 prospectus and return to Jason Eslinger at [email protected].  Please complete by November 15.
  7. The pre-season rankings for all five classes will be posted on Friday, November 16.
  8. The preliminary classification for girls basketball has been posted on the IGHSAU website. You can view this by clicking here. Please double-check and let me know if there are any changes ([email protected]) by Thursday, November 15.    We will post the Final Classification by Friday, November 16-especially note if you have entered into a Cooperative Sharing Agreement.
  9. If you have a Foreign Exchange Student who is planning on participating in basketball, be sure to complete the Foreign Exchange Student Application Form (go to the IGHSAU website – go to the Administrator tab – go to Foreign Exchange Student Participation – please scan and submit to [email protected] if you have not already done that for the year ASAP).
  10. Chuck Brittain is serving as the IGHSAU Coordinator of Officials. Chuck has arranged for evaluators throughout the state to observe, give feedback to officials, and provide information to assist Chuck in the assignment of the post-season officials.  If you need to contact Chuck related to officials or basketball rules, please email him at [email protected].
  11. If your school is interested in hosting post-season games, please remember to submit your request to host on the IGHSAU website – go to the Coaches and Administrators tab – go to online forms. Please be accurate on requested info.
  12. A reminder that you are allowed one jamboree at the varsity level prior to your first game and 3 three additional scrimmages during the season. If you have been approved to play in a Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge Scrimmage, that would count as one of your three scrimmages.
  13. Please make sure each student is eligible to participate – scholarship rule check, physicals, concussion forms. If you have a new student in your school, be sure you have completed the Transfer Eligibility Checklist.
  14. One additional item: as you were viewing the online rules meeting, the power point mentioned that athletes were expected to wear the uniforms as manufactured.  The National Federation has emphasized the need for the uniforms to be worn as purchased.  The key part that I want to emphasize (officials have also been given this information) – UNIFORM SHORTS SHALL NOT BE ROLLED DOWN!!!  Coaches, please take care of this in advance of the start of your games.  I know that this may seem like a trivial and unnecessary regulation but the National Federation has emphasized this.  The officials and coaches need to have a common interpretation as we enter the season.  Again, UNIFORM SHORTS SHALL NOT BE ROLLED DOWN!!!

If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].  Have a great season!!
